Narcisse Berchère (1819-1891) is a very famous orientalist French painter. Several museums and numerous books has exhibited / treated his talented work. This nice pencil drawing, showing a girl and four studies of a man, come from the artist Estate sale and has been stamped at this occasion. Berchère was friend of Gérôme and with him traveled from North Africa to Egypt several time. The condition of this original piece is excellent .

Note about this collection of drawings by Andre Derain (1880-1954 ). Andre Derain and his friend Maurice de Vlaminck co founded the fauvism movement in the early 1904. They used intense colors applied directly on the canvass from the paint tube. Both lived in the fancy west suburb of Paris near Chatou where the Impressionist painters started they outdoor masterpieces. Like many artist of the time lots of alcohol were involved. Vlaminck in his memoir recalled the time Andre Derain felt drunk from the running train. Henri matisse joined the fauve style in the early period. The fauvism became the mark of a group of early twentieth-century modern artists whose works emphasized painterly qualities and strong color over the representational or realistic values retained by Impressionism. While Fauvism as a style began around 1904 and continued beyond 1910, the movement as such lasted only a few years. I bought 55 of Andre Derain drawings at the auction held March 22-24, 2002 by auctioneers Loiseau and Schmitz in Saint Germain en Laye , France. Ms Knaublich was Andre Derain mistress, he never married. The drawings sold at the auction was first inherited by Andre Charlemagne Derain called " Bobby" son of the artist then they went to his mother when bobby passed away. All the drawings sold has been expertized and catalogued by the experts in charge of Ms Knaublich estate. I sold a few to collectors and designers over the years, the drawings here are the ones left in my collection.

Drawings from the 1920's to the 70's.
Fifteen years ago I boughts hundreeds of drawings from the estate of Neil Lovisco (1900-1981 ) American art dealer. In the 1920s, Lovisco ran "The Catacombs," a combination art gallery-tea room in New York City's Greenwich Village. He later operated the Bearskin Neck Art Gallery, Rockport, Mass. (1946-1949), Art Center Gallery, New York, N.Y. (1950s), and the Lovisco Gallery, New York, N.Y. (1957-1973) and Gloucester, Mass. (1973-1979). Lovisco papers can be consulted at the Smithonian archives of American arts.
Most are unsigned, many nudes, some were made by Neil Lovisco, others are signed by artists he represented. Like the 3 Vertes watercolors, one is signed. Some of these drawings has monograms, different hands and art techniques are obvious in this collection. A folder add the title " Student Art League New York" it also have some teacher empty report for that school, it was said Lovisco has been a teacher and it was said that some drawings in that collection came from that time. Here are a few lot of similar nude drawings can be offered for sale. These drawings are dated from 1920 to 1960.
