Geoges Jacob
1739 – 1814
Set of 3 superb carved painted wood Louis 16 period large armchairs stamped ” G * IACOB” , the famous French cabinet maker. I believe the paint to be original. On the photo showing the Jacob stamp we can see these armchairs has been over paint with black, witch has been removed time ago. That black has an interesting history and his referenced in many books. During the French revolution, many monarchists who were lucky to stay alive, painted there furniture in black as they were mourning the death of their king. I checked only one armchair for stamp, the upholstery been redo with springs in the late 19th century. The 3 armchairs have exactly the same dimension, but the one on the right has little carving detail different (or missing) on the bottom the legs. Construction is all pegged as it should be. It was illegal to glue chairs and armchairs in France before the revolution. The scroll arms are superb and very dynamic. The way the aprons are carved on the top of each legs, not going up to each side rails, is very unique. Geoges Jacob did not carved these typical aprons in that unusual and creative way on all his creations, as far as I know only Georges Jacob carved it this way in the late 1770’s.
Dimensions: wide 23″3/4 , deep 22″, high 36″1/2 .
