Alexandre Kostanda Vallauris Ceramique
Born 1924 Poland
Three pichets with differents decors. All with engraved script ” A. Kostanda ” Vallauris stamp and Kostanda studio stamps.
Left and right in perfect condition, the center water picher has a repaired crack.
Circa 1955.
Kostand started ceramic in Biot in 1936. Went to Cluny in 1942 .During the war Kostanda teach the art of ceramic to the four founders of the Accolay Studio Ceramic. He established himself in Vallauris in 1949 and worked in Giraud studio (see my web for a piece of this period). To finally create his own Vallauris studio in 1953.

Good quality heavy ceramic deeply incised with painter décor.
Face a woman standing, back same woman with a young girl walking away.
Most probably French in the Van Dongen era, deep red clay.
Red and black inscriptions on the bottom not lisible.
The piece was hand turned, fingers traces inside then deeply carved.
A Small damage on the side ( see photo) and two damages on the bottom.
High is 13″9/16 diameter is 6’1/2

Alexandre Kostanda Cluny ceramic.
Born Poland 1924
Two superb ceramic plates, engraved marks ” A Kostanda Cluny”. Both in perfect condition.
After a passage in Biot Kostanda went to Cluny in 1942. Taught to the founders of Accolay during the war, and went to Vallauris in 1942. Kostanda has been described as one of the master ceramic potter of the 20th century. His ceramics are most perfect techniques using very cooking temperatures to give a particular style of his own. Being a ceramic collector : it is a pleasure to touch his fascinating texture. These two plates can be dated from the second war period.
